Punch cutter:

The punch cutter is one of the easiest ways to open a cigar for smoking, and its relatively small diameter compared to other styles results in a more restricted airway, while removing the least amount of tobacco from the cap. The hole created by this method gives more control over the flow of smoke to the palate, although it is up to you to decide. The narrow airway can sometimes be very restrictive, especially if the cigar has any internal obstructions or forks, and the area of ​​the cuts themselves can also quickly become dull, as the circular blade must be rotated several times to completely pierce each cut.

Cutting with a punch involves finding the center of the cigar, literally, as the best punch cuts are placed on the cap of the cigar rather than around the center. Once you have found the center, place your punch on the cap (check again to make sure it is centered) and slowly rotate it back and forth, gradually inserting the blade into the tobacco until it is fully seated.

Now remove the blade in the same manner, making sure that it is the depth you desire and that the recess is free of excess tobacco, and you are ready to start smoking. In larger ring gauge cigars, additional cuts can be made in a Venn diagram pattern with some cuts cutting off other sections, resulting in a more open airway.
