Before cutting a cigarette, keep in mind what type of cigarette you are dealing with in terms of shape and appearance!
Generally, cigarettes are divided into two general groups in terms of appearance:
Pargos (Parejo, Parejo, Parjo): Parejo
Figurados: Figurado
Parejo cigarettes are cigarettes that usually have a straight, straight body and are parallel from the beginning to the end of the cigarette with a semicircular and round cap. The most common models in this form are:
Corona, Robusto, Toro, Longsdale, Churlchill
Figurados are cigarettes that do not have the standard first form and appearance and usually have a pointed cap. The most common types in this form are:
Torpedo, Belicoso, Pyramid, Diadema
Punch: A small, portable device about the size of a bullet that has a round, cylindrical, hollow blade that is pressed against the cap of the cigar, creating a circular cut approximately 1/4 inch in size.
Punch Cut:
A punch cut is one of the easiest ways to open a cigar for smoking, and its relatively small diameter compared to other styles results in a more restricted airway, while removing the least amount of tobacco from the cap. The hole created by this method gives more control over the flow of smoke to the palate, although that is up to you to decide. The narrow airway can sometimes be very restrictive, especially if the cigar has any kind of internal obstruction or forked tip, and the cut area itself can also quickly become dull, as the circular blade must rotate several times to completely pierce each cut.
Punching involves literally finding the center of the cigar, as the best punch cuts are made on the cap of the cigar rather than around the center. Once you have found the center, place your punch on the cap (check again to make sure it is centered) and gently rotate it back and forth, gradually inserting the blade into the tobacco until it is fully seated. Now remove the blade in the same manner, making sure that the depth is to your liking and that the recess is free of excess tobacco, and you are ready to start smoking. On larger ring gauge cigars, the additional cuts can be made in a Venn diagram pattern with some cuts cutting off other sections, resulting in a more open airway.
