Missouri Meerschaum Great Dane Pipe: A Sad Farewell to a Purebred Giant
In the glorious world of corn pipes, there are some models that go beyond a smoking tool and become symbols of power and efficiency. The Great Dane pipe from the legendary Missouri Meerschaum company is exactly one of these symbols. The name of this pipe comes from the large and powerful dog breed “Denver”, which itself expresses the main characteristics of this product: strength, size and bold presence. But today, we are not just facing a pipe, but a rare phenomenon on the market; because according to the official announcement of the company, the production of this model has stopped and its stock is limited. In this review, I’m going to explore why this pipe should be one of your last chances to buy.
“Hearty” Design and “Full-Size” Dimensions
The company’s introduction calls this pipe a “hearty variation.” That’s the most accurate description of the Great Dane. Unlike many corn pipes that are designed for quick, short puffs, the Great Dane is a full-bodied, large pipe. Its weight and bulk give you a sense of confidence when you hold it in your hand. The large bowl of this pipe allows you to fill it with a significant amount of tobacco and enjoy a long, deep smoke. This pipe is not for a 10-minute smoke in traffic; this pipe is made for a winter night, a good book, and a quiet sit by the fireplace.
Non-Filtered & No 6mm Filter
One of the most important technical aspects I have to emphasize is the air system of this pipe. The description states: “This pipe does not support a standard 6mm filter.” For a novice, this may seem like a drawback, but for a professional smoker, it is a huge advantage.
The lack of a filter and filter chamber means that the air path inside the shank and stem of the pipe is completely open and smooth. This feature makes the draw resistance very light and frictionless. The smoke can pass through the tobacco with greater speed and volume, resulting in a richer, cooler and clearer flavor. This pipe is designed for those who want to connect directly with the spirit of tobacco without any intermediaries.
Modern-day Flexibility: Bent or Straight?
Another interesting thing about the current stock of this pipe is the variety of stem designs. The description warns that you may receive a pipe with a bent stem or a straight stem. This is due to inventory management during the last production run.
* Bent Stem: Slightly alters the gravity of the smoke and is preferred for slow smoking.
* Straight Stem: A true classic that offers direct ergonomics and a direct view of the burn bowl.
This uncertainty in the stem model is actually an opportunity. You have the opportunity to buy a Great Dane model that may never be produced again.
“Discontinued” Status: An Investment in a Collection
The company description is very important: “This item is being discontinued, so quantities are limited.” In the world of pipe collectors, pipes that have been discontinued are worth twice as much. With its large body, high build quality and no filter, the Great Dane Pipe is sure to become a rare and sought-after item in the years to come. Buying this pipe now is not just buying a smoking tool, but an investment in a piece of Missouri Mersham history.
Summary
The Missouri Mersham Pipe, the Great Dane, is the epitome of power and simplicity. With its large bowl, filterless breathing system and solid construction, this pipe is built for serious smokers looking for a complete and long-lasting experience. The news of the discontinuation of this model is sad but at the same time a golden opportunity for those who have been hesitant to buy it. If you want a true “giant” in smoking capabilities that will never be produced again, the Great Dane is your last chance.
