Balsa trees grow in the humid and rainy forests of South America, for example, a country like Ecuador contributes significantly to the production of balsa wood in the world. Balsa trees grow very quickly and are ready to be cut within 6 to 10 years, reaching a height of about 30 meters and a diameter of more than one meter. If the tree lives longer than this, its wood hardens and less of it can be used.

Depending on which part of the tree and how deep it is cut, balsa wood will have a variable specific gravity. In general, the lighter the color of balsa wood, the lower the specific gravity and the more hollow it will be, and the darker the pieces will have greater density and hardness. In general, many balsa woods on the market have a combination of these properties, and it is practically very difficult to distinguish between wood that is completely soft or hard.
