Old German Clay: Markus Fohr Regal Tower
Known for their neutral smoking qualities, clay pipes are used by blenders when testing new leaves and new blends. Briar is a wonderful material for pipes, but it adds a flavor of its own, one that most of us appreciate, but we all have occasion for tasting a tobacco in the purest form we can render. When we want that neutral medium, we can find no one able to boast the experience of Markus Fohr, whose family has been hand pressing clay pipes for multiple generations. Fohr still uses molds of brass and iron that are over 200 years old, utilizing the famous clay of his region in Germany, clay that has a worldwide reputation for its use in fine pottery. It’s also excellent for pipes, like the paneled, deep-chambered Stack presented here with a tall, narrow bowl carved to emulate the appearance of a regal tower paired to a long, gracefully arching vulcanite mouthpiece. It enables this piece to be comfortably clenched without damaging the clay and is perfect for anyone curious about the smoking properties of clay pipes but prefer a familiar, more durable stem material.
